Vampire Diaries Season 1 Episode 13 "Children of the Damned"

In flashbacks, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) recall the long-ago actions taken by townspeople including their father, Guiseppe Salvatore (guest star James Remar, "Dexter"), and Pearl (guest star Kelly Hu, "Army Wives"), leading to the devastating events that caused the rift in their relationship. In the present, Bonnie's (Katerina Graham) date with Ben (guest star Sean Faris) takes a frightening turn. Elena (Nina Dobrev) helps Stefan as he and Damon race to find the missing journal that belonged to Elena's ancestor. Stefan learns the reason behind Alaric's (Matt Davis) interest in both the journal and the town's history. Damon discovers that an old acquaintance has returned to town with an agenda he understands. Steven R. McQueen and Sara Canning also star. Marcos Siega directed the episode written by Kevin Williamson & Julie Plec (#112).

"Children of the Damned", the long awaited flashback episode, was all about Damon. We finally got a glimpse into why he has this animosity towards Stefan and has trust issues. It was a nice change of pace to see Damon before he was corrupted by life. It was also nice to see the two brothers as friends. If you didn't have the pleasure of watching last night's episode, I'll give you a quick run down of what happened.

In the flashbacks:

1. Damon wasn't always a jerk, his brother just betrayed his trust back in 1864 and he just can't let it go.


2. The founders of Mystic Falls learned they were amongst vampires and were hell bent on getting rid of them. Jonathon Gilbert created the compass that tracks their whereabouts.


3. Stefan and Damon competed for their father, Giuseppe Salvatore's, approval. Damon was on the shorter end of that stick due to his fall out with the Confederacy.


4. Katherine's good friend and alchemist, Pearl, uncovered that the townspeople were using vervaine to try and find the vampires.


5. Damon begged Stefan not to tell his father about Katherine's dirty little secret. Stefan, having faith in his father, inadvertently let the cat out of the bag when he questioned his father's ideas on how to handle the vampires.


6. Giuseppe fed Stefan vervaine to expose Katherine and ergo destroyed Damon's trust in his brother.


7. Anna, AKA Annabelle, was really Pearl's daughter - who turned out to be a vampire. We're assuming Anna was born before Pearl was turned, or else they've got some 'splainin' to do!


8. Pearl's vampire secret is discovered by her love, Jonathon Gilbert, when his compass tracked her. In looking to save his arse, he turned her in to the townspeople. Emily promised Anna that she would protect Pearl and reassured her they will see each other again.

In present day:

1. Damon conspired with Stefan and Elena to find the grimoire. Elena promised to look for Jonathon's journal in an attempt to appease him.


2. Anna clearly turned Ben so she could use him to do her "dirty work", as she said.


3. Stefan confronted Alaric about the journal and its whereabouts. Alaric confessed that Damon killed his wife and he is in Mystic Falls to find out what happened to his wife's body.


4. Alaric has a sweet "stake launcher".


5. Jenna developed a small crush on Damon when he dropped by the Gilbert home to make dinner.


6. Damon heartfeltly asked Elena if Stefan is trustworthy and she lied through her teeth.


7. Bonnie enjoyed her date with Ben until she kissed him and realized what he truly is. When she attempted to blow the joint, Ben kidnapped her.


8. Stefan got a hold of Alaric's copies of the journal and learned that the grimoire was buried with his father.


9. Damon found Anna and also learned of where the much saught after book lied.


10. The two lovebirds set off to dig up Giuseppe and found the book clutched in his hands.


11. Damon showed up just in time to have his heart smashed again. He expected Stefan's betrayal, but trusted Elena (and everyone wonders why he is the way he is!)


12. In a surefire attempt to get a hold of the grimoire, he forced Elena to drink his blood and threatened to snap her neck.


13. The last thing Stefan wants is a vampire girlfriend, so he gave up the book in exchange for her life.


14. Back at home, Stefan confided in Elena that he feels guilt for what happened between him and Damon.


15. Stefan also learned who Anna truly is and that she's been invited into the Gilbert home. He rushed back to Elena only to find that she's vanished.
